Major Price Drop for Solid State Drives

What is the best thing you can do to speed up your computer? Replace your old hard drive with an SSD!

Prices of SSD’s have now dropped to below $1 per GB. In some cases you can even find sale prices of around $0.50 per GB. That makes it more affordable to upgrade your computer with a SSD that’s about five times faster than your average spinning hard drive.

Rumor has it that the reason SSD prices plummeted is because the major players are trying to squeeze out the small companies by initiating a price war that only the big companies can participate in.

Another reason may be due to an oversupply in NAND flash chips (the main component of an SSD). OEMs have over-estimated the demand from mobile phones, tablets, and Ultrabooks, which in turn led to an abundance of NAND flash chips.

Either way, if you’ve been holding off on upgrading, now is a good time to buy. Prices may continue to trickle down, but they’re unlikely to plummet after the latest round of deep cuts. Rather than continued price cuts, we’ll probably start seeing more higher capacity SSDs come on to the market.
