CCleaner Infected With Malware – Are You Affected?
For years CCleaner has been part of our toolkit and we’ve recommended it countless amounts of times as the only program we would trust to properly and safely remove old registry entries. Which is why we’re giving them a pass on this issue.
We’ll make this short and to the point for our customers since it actually turned out as good of a situation as it could have been. In fact, for those of you in a hurry and don’t want to read on longer, just update your version of CCleaner and you’ll get rid of the malware.
What Happened?
The 32-bit legitimate version of CCleaner had an update infected with malware released on August 15, 2017. It was discovered nearly a month later. It’s still unclear on how the malware was embedded in the update. The fortunate part of all this is it appears that nothing bad or negative occurred from the malware. The code was definitely there and ready to go, but there wasn’t any further infections nor malicious actions done.
What Should I Do Now?
If you have the full version of CCleaner installed, update it to the latest version. We’d be happy to help with this, if needed.
What Should I Do in the Future?
We’d still recommend keeping CCleaner up to date. Things like this happen rarely and you can be sure there are going to be a lot of eyes on this software’s updates for the time coming. It also would be recommended to keep your antivirus up to date, run a full scan, and keep Windows up to date. If you’re on our Maintenance Plan, all of this has already been done for you!
